What the Wellness?

I have to admit that although I’ve been in the wellness industry for a few years, maintain a relatively healthy lifestyle, and consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable about the latest trends and products in wellness……...that your girl is overwhelmed.

It tends to happen when I take a deep dive on Instagram. I end up on some new health “guru’s” page, or find a new supplement brand to make paleo pancakes with, and I find myself thinking, “what the heck is this?” or “I’m not buying that.”

I think the disconnect begins when I start seeing things I’ve never heard of before, like some crazy new superfood, or when I read a supplement I have no idea how to pronounce. I automatically think this is NOT for me. And if something I’m unfamiliar with does actually intrigue me, once I see the price tag I’m like NAH I’m good.

For me, wellness was never ashwagandha, celery juice, matcha, almond flour, gluten free or keto. These things might look like wellness to some people which is totally fine, I just can’t say it ever remotely looked like that for me.

If a well informed, health conscious person like myself is feeling overwhelmed from the vast array of current wellness products and trends, I can only imagine how a person who is not as health conscious might feel like trying to navigate this phenomenon. It’s pretty apparent how the world of wellness is currently framed, and why it has been inaccessible, or seemingly unapproachable to certain groups of people.

Sometimes I find myself questioning my lack of knowledge if I’ve never heard of something before, or I become critical and say things to myself like, “You should know about this Beatrice! Why don’t you know what this is? You’re not as conscious as you think you are.” And that needs to stop.

I have to constantly remind myself that I’m doing my best, and that I’m still learning. And sometimes learning is unlearning the majority of things we were taught growing up and that is the first step. For anyone out there that finds themselves confused or struggling with negative self talk I implore you to please, please be gentle with yourself. It’s ok to not know. It’s ok if you’re not interested in giving up meat, or that you don’t really like kombucha. What’s important is that you’re trying. The fact that you even stumbled on this page means that you’ve already started on your own path to wellness! And just remember that your journey may not look like mine or anyone else’s. Take this time to explore and figure out what works for you, and how to be the most authentic and happiest version of yourself!
